Stop Receiving Spam

Spam is the name given to junk email, named after the Monty Python Spam song. Spam is usually sent to multiple, sometimes thousands of email address, of unwelcome messages to a newsgroup or mailing list to promote a commercial product or web site - offering such things as money-spinning ideas, holidays, and so on.

If you want to avoid getting spam - or restrict the amount you receive, you can invest in software that will highlight emails and put them away for you to review and delete - such software can be purchased which can help reduce the amount of spam received in your email inbox.

Another way to lower the amount of spam you receive is to not give out your email address to any web sites. If you want to give out your email address, we suggest that you have two email addresses - a primary address for your friends and family. And a second for web site use - so that all correspondents go to this address, and can be easily replaced once the level of junk gets too much.

Always make sure that you check or uncheck every box that says that you do not want to receive future mailings from the web site, nor join their mailing list. The same can be done to non internet companies as well,, which you give your email address out to. Following these rules - you should get hardly any (if none at all) junk email. Always remember, if you do get spam - never reply to it, even to ask to get your name removed from the list, or click any web links - as this can confirm that your address is active, meaning more junk will come your way.

You can also setup message rules in Outlook Express to move messages containing specific words that you specify to the deleted messages folder - for you to review or permanently delete. In Outlook Express;
  1. Click Tools>Message Rules>Mail
  2. In the new window - click on the New button
  3. In the top box, tick the box saying 'Where the message body contains specific words'
  4. Below, tick the delete it box, or, move to a specific folder
  5. Click the specific words link at the bottom (if you selected that) and add some words that you would like to filter into the selected folder.
  6. Press OK - and now all messages that contain that word will be moved into the folder
Check the folder you send the messages to often, just to make sure that the message rule does not filter a message that is not junk - as the message may of contained a word that may have matched one of those specified.
