What is Phishing?
Phishing is the act of tricking someone into giving them confidential information or tricking them into doing something that they normally wouldn’t do or shouldn’t do. It is characterised by attempts to fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy person or business (such as a Bank, or other established companies) in an apparently official electronic communication. Phishing is typically carried out using email or an instant message, though it has more recently exploited fax. The term phishing derives from password harvesting and the use of increasingly sophisticated lures to "fish" for users' financial information and passwords.
A phishing email can be easily spotted, by close examination of spelling, where the email came from (ie. the sender email address), and where any links within the email go to. No respected company will ever ask you for password, or credit card number by email. Never reply, or respond to these messages. If you believe that the email message is legitimate, open up a web browser, and manually type in the companies web address, and log into your account and deal with any issues that way. You could also contact the company at hand, directly by phone, or by a contact form found on their website, to confirm if the email you received is genuine.
