Viruses and Staying protected
Any computer connected to the internet is likely to get a virus of some sort - however, viruses are not limited to just the internet. This is because if you attempt to run a program that a friend has given to you on a disk, then this could be containing a virus, and running it can make your computer infected with it.
A virus is essentially a computer program, which is usually designed to create problems for the computer user, by perhaps deleting random files, forwarding itself to your email contacts to spread itself, adding some sort of spy ware to your computer, or worse - creating an access point for a hacker to gain entry to your computer. Keeping your computer up to date will help in most cases, as some viruses exploit operating system loop holes.
Viruses can arrive on your computer in several ways, either by email, on a CD (as mentioned earlier), by visiting a hacked web page, or by downloading a program from an infected computer or server - either from a download page, or via Peer-to-Peer (P2P).
Luckily, programs exist which can scan for viruses, and stop them in their tracks before they can cause any major damage. Two versions of software exists, one is which you can buy the software - which is usually better at detecting viruses, and another is free software. There are many different software packages which you can purchase, and sometimes, you can get an 'all in one' internet solution which allows you to also get a firewall and parental controls. Browse through some of the anti-virus software which is available to purchase. Alternatively, Grisoft have developed a highly popular free home anti-virus solution, named AVG Free.
